Karakia

Karakia are similar to prayers, in that they are incantations for a positive outcome. Traditionally, these were chanted, and had a three-part structure.

On this page are three karakia we aim to use to start and close kapa haka and meetings, and there is one for kai as well.

You can click on the links to download various versions via googledocs. Do let me know if you can't open them- sometimes the system plays tricks on me.

Ka kite,

Whakataka te hau ki te uru
Whakataka te hau ki te tōnga
Kīa makinakina ki uta
Kīa mataratara ki tae
e hī ake ana, te atakura
He tio, he huka, he hauhu
Tihei Mauri Ora!

Get ready for the westerly
and be prepared for the southerly.

It will be icy cold inland,
and icy cold on the shore.

May the dawn rise red-tipped on ice,
on snow, on frost.

Tākiri ko te ata,
Kōrihi ko te manu,
Ka ao, ka awatea,
Tihei mauri ora!

The morning dawns
Birdsong resonates
So dawns a new day
Let there be life!

A new one we are learning, composed by Tom Alesana.

Karakia Mutunga

Kua mutu o mātou mahi
Mō tēnei wā
Manaakitia mai mātou katoa
O mātou hoa
O mātou whānau
Aio ki te aorangi

Our work has finished
for the moment
Bless us all
Our friends
Our families
Peace to the universe

Kia tau iho te āio

Ki runga i a mātou

Kua mutu ngā mahi

Kua tutuki, kua ea

Haumi e, hui e, tāiki e!

May peace be dispersed

Upon us all

Our work is done

Our goals are accomplished

Let the day be done

Another new one we are learning, composed by Tom Alesana.

Karakia mo te Kai
Nau mai e ngā hua
o te wao
o te ngakina
o te wai tai
o te wai Māori
Nā Tane
Nā Rongo
Nā Tangaroa
Nā Maru
Ko Ranginui e tū iho nei
Ko Papatūānuku e takoto nei
Tuturu whakamaua
Kia tina! TINA! Hui e! TĀIKI E! I
Welcome the gifts of food
from the sacred forests
from the cultivated gardens
from the sea
from the fresh waters
The food of Tane
of Rongo
of Tangaroa
of Maru
I acknowledge Ranginui who is above me,
Papatuanuku who lies beneath me
Let this be my commitment to all!
Draw together! Affirm!
